NCT has one of the most modern and accessible bus fleets in the UK, with over £30m spent on new buses in the past 5 years.

A national government target set in 2000 requires bus operators to have 50% of their bus fleet 'low floor' by 2010 and NCT met this target 5 years early, with 92% of our 320 buses now 'low floor'.

'Low floor' buses operate on the majority of our routes - see below for the current list - and are able to carry pushchairs without them being folded down. If you are travelling with a pushchair, you must ensure that it is suitably loaded, does not obstruct the aisle and that you stay with your child in the bay at all times. Our buses will soon start to display a maximum number of pushchairs per vehicle and you should be prepared to fold down your pushchair if the space is full or the bus is busy.

Physical access on to buses for wheelchairs is covered by the Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations of 2000 which require every one of Nottingham City Transport's buses to be fully accessible (certified to accomodate a wheelchair) by 2017. About 56% of the buses we operate now meet the stringent standards set down in these regulations to safely accomodate 1 wheelchair on the bus.

Wheelchair Logo

A wheelchair can only be carried on buses which show the blue wheelchair logo on the outside of the bus near the entrance door. We run wheelchair accessible buses on our most popular routes, as identified below, and introduce wheelchair accessible buses on to routes every year as new buses arrive. NCT will be fully accessible ahead of the legislatvie 2017 date.

Our accessible buses can only accomodate a maximum of 1 wheelchair which should be positioned facing rearwards against the back rest with the brake applied and the side arm (where fitted) in position. Check with the advice displayed on the bus for more details. When there is a wheelchair already on board the bus, for safety reasons, no pushchairs will be then be allowed on board.

All space on our buses is available on a first come, first served basis. Wheelchair users do not have priority over any other passenger. If the space is already occupied, the driver should ask passengers if they are prepared to move to allow a wheelchair user to board. The law does not give the driver the power to make someone move if they refuse. If people occupying the space refuse to move or cannot move to another part of the bus, then we are unable to accomodate a wheelchair on the bus and you should wait for the next available bus.

NCT makes every effort to ensure that low floor vehicles and wheelchair accessible buses operate on these routes, but occasionally it may be necessary to use buses with stepped entrances or ones which cannot accomodate a wheelchair, if the allocated bus is unavailable (e.g. damage to vehicle, vehicle breakdown).
