Minister to launch new Link P+R services
The new Link 1 and Link 2 bus services are to be launched by a Government minister next week.

The services, to be launched by Transport Minister Tony McNulty on Monday September 6, upgrade the existing services run from the Park & Ride sites at Queen's Drive and Nottingham Racecourse. The new services will also provide regular links to major employment sites located in these areas of Nottingham.  Routes around the city centre are also being improved and this will allow better interchange with bus and NET services to all parts of the City.

Link 1 will run from the Boots site at Beeston, past Imperial Tobacco into Queen's Drive Park & Ride and then through to B&Q and Experian and into the City via Queen's Drive, the Railway Station and Capital One. It will do a complete loop of the City Centre taking in Broadmarsh, the Lace Market and the Victoria Centre area.

Link 2 will run from Victoria Retail Park (B&Q, Morrisons), via Colwick Industrial Estate (Hilary's Blinds), the Racecourse Park & Ride, NTL, Daleside Rd, Lady Bay Retail Park, the Island site (BBC, emda, NHS Direct), then do a loop of the city centre via the Ice Arena and the Victoria and Broadmarsh shopping centres.

Services between the Park & Ride sites and the City will by operated every ten minutes throughout the day by new branded low-floor buses for easy access. Both services will be run by Nottingham City Coaches, under tender to the City Council. This means that bus passes and smartcards can be used.

Councillor Brian Grocock, Executive Member for Transport and Street Services, said: "These great new services will integrate with the rest of the public transport network and provide a safe and sustainable link to most major employment sites in and around the city. We're confident they will prove popular with commuters and city visitors alike and estimate that over 900,000 people will use them in the first year."

The improved services aim to provide easy access to employment sites to 85 per cent of Nottingham residents, reduce congestion by attracting an estimated 360,000 cars in the first full year of operation, provide 56,000 workers with a link no more than 400m from their employment site, and provide a swift and reliable service for an estimated 350,000 shopping and leisure trips.

The services are being complemented by a package of other measures including accessible bus stops, new shelters, bus priority/junction improvements and real-time information displays. These and other capital costs of £600,000 and annual running costs of £1.5m will be mostly met through fares, along with funds from Nottingham City Council and the Department for Transport.

Fare options include a £2.30 Cityrider day ticket for all NCT buses including Links 1&2 and NET, and a £3.20 Kangaroo day ticket for all bus operators, tram and trains.  Regular users can take advantage of NCT's “EasyRider City” ticket.  The new “EasyRider Anytime” ticket will allow the users to be 10 non-consecutive days of travel for £22 or 20 non-consecutive days of travel for £43.

NCT delivering a better service
Although bus patronage across Nottingham disappointingly reduced last year, 2004 has seen many improvements in the delivery of NCT service, offering a consistently reliable and punctual service to passengers in the City, resulting in passenger growth on the most popular routes.

Taking on board passenger comments about service reliability, and the need to meet the Traffic Commissioner's requirement that driver shortages would not affect service performance, NCT took the difficult decision to reduce the number of routes and journeys operated.

Mark Fowles , NCT Managing Director stated that, “The October 2003 service revision was a change NCT would have preferred not to have made. Patronage had been growing at 1.5% per annum across the network since September 2001, so it was tough to reduce network capacity when we wanted to increase it”.

The necessary October 2003 revision, designed to improve reliability and passenger confidence in the NCT network is now showing the expected results.

Improvements at NCT include:

  • Inflation busting pay awards in September 2003 (13%) and April 2004 (4.5%) to recruit and retain drivers to improve reliability and punctuality
  • Patronage on Go2, NCT's 15 frequent, low floor services along all the main corridors into the city, up 7.3% during the first quarter (to over 6.05 million passengers) compared to the same quarter last year
  • Go2 services attracting car users – 5% of bus users previously used the car
  • Service punctuality ahead of national requirements - 99.8% of all 34,000 weekly journeys operated since October 2003
  • Service reliability exceeding Traffic Commissioner's 95% target – 97.6% of observed journeys departing the City Centre within the window of tolerance “1 minute early, 5 minutes late”
  • Improved passenger satisfaction – 6 out of 8 service features improved since 1998, 52% users surveyed felt the service had improved
  • Link 37, the new direct low floor City – QMC Forecourt Shuttle service (launched 18 April 2004 ) already carrying 6,500 passengers per week
  • Reinstatement of several routes and journeys altered in the October 2003 revision, meeting NCT's promise to enhance the network as driver numbers increased
  • NCT was the successful bidder for three City Council contracted services – Skylink (Nottingham to Nottingham East Midlands Airport) and the new Park and Ride routes Link 1 and 2, to be launched 6th September 2004
  • 20% of bus fleet fitted with CCTV – target for all buses to be fitted by 2008, for enhanced safety and security

all details will be received in complete confidence.

  • Simplified Maroon Line services 12 and 13 for Dunkirk and Beeston
  • Reinstatement of service 13 in the evenings and weekends and the 88 on Sunday daytimes
  • Additional peak buses and revised timings to improve service delivery

Commercial Manager Barrie Burch stated “NCT have delivered a consistent service throughout the summer, operating 99.8% of all 34,000 weekly journeys and achieving service punctuality ahead of national requirements. We are delighted that NCT are able to enhance services further, now that the driver situation has improved”

Details about the service revision are given in the September edition of “Network News”, this will be mailed out directly to easyrider / buscard holders, these will also be available from the Travel Centre in the Old Market Square. New timetable leaflets will be available week ending 28th August.

The Changes

Service 2                    Leaflet not reprinted
Bus stop Xb on Mount Street will no longer be used. The nearest stop is Beastmarket Hill, which is the main stop for this route.

Service 4                    Leaflet not reprinted
Bus stop Xb on Mount Street will no longer be used. The nearest stop is Angel Row, which is the main stop for this route in this area.

Service 12
New service 12 will replace the existing 34 route and will be the main service for the Nottingham University Campus.

The route will be from Angel Row (stop Ad) via Mount Street, Canning Circus, Derby Road, Lenton Boulevard, Abbey Bridge, Abbey Street, Dunkirk Island, Beeston Road, University Campus (East Road, Cut Through Lane), Broadgate to Beeston Bus Station.

Buses to Nottingham operate the reverse of the above, but inbound will operate from Canning Circus via Wollaton Street, Tollhouse Hill, Maid Marian Way, Friar Lane, Beastmarket Hill to Angel Row.

Service 12 will not serve the Victoria Centre area – the main stop will be Angel Row. The last setting down stop before Angel Row will be Tollhouse Hill (under the bridge).

The basic frequency is every 30 minutes Monday to Friday daytimes (7.30am to 5.30pm) with no evening or weekend service. (This is similar to the current 34 operation).

Service 13
Service 13 terminal point in the City Centre is moved to Angel Row, stop Ad. This is to bring all Beeston services together in the same location.
The route will then be the current route until University Boulevard end, where the 13 will now go via Queens Road East, Queens Road, Station Road, Beeston Bus Station, continuing along the current 33 route to Dennis Avenue.
Service 13 will no longer serve Broadgate or the Imperial Road section. Patronage at Imperial Road has been very minimal for a long time.

The 13C will continue to operate the current route, but via Queens Road etc. and not Broadgate. Departures will be: from Chilwell: 06.41, 07.11, 07.50, 08.20; from City: 07.20, 07.50, 17.05, 17.35.

The 13 will operate every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes, and will be reinstated to run every hour in the evenings and on Sundays. There will also be early morning buses running at similar times to the current 33.
Between Lace Street and City, buses will run every 15 minutes combined on routes 12 and 13 on a Monday to Friday.
Service 13 will now be operated with midi-buses, which are adequate for the levels of capacity carried on this route.

Service 14, 14A, 14X
These services are replaced by “Link 1” and will stop running at the end of service on Friday 3 September 2004. See “Link 1” for more information.

Service 21                  Leaflet not reprinted
In response to growing patronage, an additional bus from Carlton Valley to City will run on Mondays to Fridays at 07.52.

Service 29
Service 29 will no longer serve Nottingham Business Park and will terminate at Burnside Green. (Nottingham Business Park will still be served by the 70 and 70X). There is a completely revised timetable.

Some journeys (29C) will continue along Bramhall Road and Bilborough Road to Bilborough College , stopping outside the campus at the lay-by near the campus entrance.
The morning bus from City will depart at 08.20, arriving at Bilborough College at 08.48. The afternoon buses depart from Bilborough College at 15.46 and 17.11.

Service 30
In response to growing patronage, the following additional Monday to Friday journeys will be introduced:

  • 07.40 from Wollaton Vale to City

  • 09.00 from The Wheelhouse to City

  • 16.20 from City to Wollaton Vale

  • 17.45 from City to Wollaton Vale

Services 33 and 34
These services are withdrawn, and will be replaced by new Maroon Line 12 and 13 – see above for details.

Service 46                 Leaflet not reprinted
Schooldays only – 15.48 from Plains Estate to City will run 10 minutes earlier throughout. (This is due to changes to the school day at Christ the King).

Service 48                 Leaflet not reprinted
Bus stop Xb on Mount Street will no longer be used.

Service 49A                Leaflet not reprinted
Bus stop Xb on Mount Street will no longer be used. (This is because Mount Street will become the new terminal point for the Park and Ride services).

Service 56                  Leaflet not reprinted
Schooldays only – 15.43 from Plains Estate (56X) to City will run 5 minutes earlier throughout. (This is due to changes to the school day at Christ the King).

Service 60, 62            Leaflet not reprinted
At the Victoria Centre, buses will use stop Ve instead of Vb. This is to provide an improved stopping place in this area and to minimise conflict with the taxi rank.

Service 76
Following discussions with Nottingham City Council and the Business Park developers, service 76 will be withdrawn due to low patronage over the service 76 specific section of the route. Service 77 covers the vast majority of this route and Nottingham Business Park will still be served by the 70 and 70X.

Service 87
To improve reliability and timekeeping, most journeys from the City Hospital through to Arnold will run slightly later than at present. There is no change to the current frequency.

Service 88
In line with our promises last October to reinstate services as and when driver numbers increase, the Sunday daytime service on route 88 will be reinstated.

  • From Rise Park – 10.15 and every hour until 16.15
  • From City – 10.45 and every hour until 16.45

To improve reliability and timekeeping, most journeys from the City Hospital through to Rise Park will run slightly later. Most Monday to Saturday daytime buses from Rise Park and the Warren Hill earlier will run 2 minutes later. There is no change to the current frequency.

Service 88 will now be shown in the 87 leaflet.

Service 89
To improve reliability and timekeeping, most journeys from the City Hospital through to Rise Park will run slightly later. There is no change to the current frequency.

Services 93, 94, 191, 192 and 195
The leaflet has been reprinted following the 193 timetable being moved to the 29, 30 leaflet. There are no changes to any times on these services.

Service 161
New Monday to Friday peak period service operating between City, Queens Drive and Crossgate Drive Industrial Estate. This service replaces the 14A for this area and is scheduled based on current patronage levels.

The route will be from Angel Row (stop Ab) via Mount Street, Maid Marian Way, Collin Street, Carrington Street, Waterway Street, Queens Drive to Crossgate Drive.
Afternoon journeys will commence at Electric Avenue (Experian), then to Crossgate Drive and the reverse of the above route to the City Centre (Angel Row via Maid Marian Way).

Service 193
The following journeys will now commence in the City Centre twelve minutes before the current departure time:

  • 07.52 (Mondays to Fridays) from Ringwood Crescent to Beeston
  • 08.52 (Mondays to Saturdays) from Ringwood Crescent to Beeston

Service 193 will now be shown in the 29, 30 leaflet.

School service 210
Following changes to the school day, service 210 from Rolleston Drive will now depart at 15.36, 15.39 and 15.44.

School service 211
Service 211 for Carlton-le-Willows School is withdrawn due to very poor usage. The 211 has averaged around 4 or 5 pupils per journey and we can no longer justify operating it.

Suggested alternative is:
Service 25 from Mapperley Shops at 07.54 alighting at Carlton Square at 08.05; then crossing the road and catching Pathfinder 201 at approx. 08.08 to Carlton-le-Willows School.

Service 213 from Carlton-le-Willows at 15.26 to Carlton Square, connecting with service 25 at 15.45 to Westdale Lane and Mapperley Top.

Children purchasing a Child City Rider at £1.50 for the return journey will save around 70 pence compared to current 211 fares (£1.10 each way).

Link 1 Queens Drive Park and Ride
Link 1 is the new low floor service for Queens Drive Park and Ride site, operated under contract to Nottingham City Council.
This service replaces the existing 14 group of services which will no longer operate after the end of service on Friday 3 September 2004.

The route will be: From Victoria Centre (stop Vs) via Market Street, Angel Row to Mount Street, then Maid Marian Way, Broad Marsh, Carrington Street, Waterway Street, Queens Drive, Riverside Retail Park, Experian, Electric Avenue to the Queens Drive Park and Ride site.

Buses to Nottingham operate the reverse of the above, but will use Fletcher Gate and George Street to get to the Victoria Centre (stop Vs). Currently, the Park and Ride bus terminates in Broad Marsh Bus Station – this will no longer be served when NCT commence operation. The nearest stop will be on Collin Street.

Note: On Saturdays the bus will run directly along Queens Drive to the Park and Ride site and will not serve Riverside Retail Park.

Buses will operate every 10 minutes during the Monday to Friday daytime between City and Queens Drive Park and Ride and up to every 6 minutes on a Saturday.

Some Monday to Friday journeys will then extend through to the Boots Campus along the current 14 route. (Some very early and very late buses do not run through the Park and Ride site, but directly to Boots).

On Mondays to Fridays, buses will extend through to Boots every 20 minutes during the daytime and every 10 minutes at busy periods, with occasional late evening buses from Boots to City.

Unlike the existing Park and Ride service for Queens Drive, Link 1 will call at all stops en-route and will not be limited stop.

Driver assaulted - NCT offer £1000 reward for information

Nottingham City Transport are offering up to £1000 for information leading to a successful prosecution of two youths who seriously assaulted a driver at Angel Row on NCT orange Go2 service 36 to Beeston at 4pm Tuesday 9 th August.

An NCT driver was rushed to hospital yesterday with a badly swollen eye which was cut by a passenger swinging his bag into the drivers face when he was challenged about an invalid ticket.

Two youths one black, one white attempted to board the bus with incorrect tickets, the black youth when challenged about this, swung his bag around the protective screen into the drivers face, causing serious damage to his right eye, they then left the bus and ran towards the Market Square.

The police and several witnesses are working with NCT to identify these youths and NCT are appealing to any other witnesses who maybe able to assist in these enquiries.

NCT have a reward scheme of up to £1000 payment for people providing information towards a successful conviction of passengers who assault drivers and regard the safety of drivers and passengers as critical.

Recently NCT have signed up to be one of the founding partners in the Respect for Transport campaign launch in July, the aim of this campaign is to make public transport safer thus encouraging more people to use it.

Mark Fowles MD for NCT said “It is not acceptable for people to abuse our drivers and passengers, they are providing a public service and do not deserve to be victimised in this way. We are doing everything we can to prevent and stamp out this kind of behaviour on our buses, and appeals to anyone who can help us catch these offenders”
