Councillors have approved a range of improvements to the City Council concessionary Travel Scheme that will come into effect from April 2006.
The current scheme that is already one of the most generous in the country will be further improved:
• The current annual charge of £7.50 for OAP and Disabled scheme members will be dropped from April 2006.
• Current travel restrictions for OAPs between 4pm and 6pm Monday to Friday will be removed. This will mean OAPs can travel free of charge at all times except 7.30am until 9.30am Monday to Friday.
• Disabled person’s pass holders will continue to travel free of charge at all times.
• From April 2006 all scheme members will be issued with a new concessionary travel pass called Citycard. This will include discounts at leisure centres and retail outlets, and will also act as a library card
• The pass will continue to be valid on all buses, tram and Park and Ride services within greater Nottingham and the current scheme boundaries remain unchanged.
About the existing scheme:
• The scheme benefits approximately 32,000 pensioners and 8,000 disabled City residents.
• The current scheme cost around £4.5m p/a
• Pass holders receive travel benefits equal to approximately £20 per month.
• The current £7.50 charge contributes £300,000 towards the scheme. This charge will continue to made until April 2006
• Additional funding has been made available by central government to meet the additional costs of the scheme
