A453 Consultation - Have Your Say

The Highways Agency are consulting on proposals to upgrade the A453 which is used by all NCT services going to/from Clifton. Regular passengers will know that journeys can be held up here in the rush hour and NCT would encourage you to participate in this important consultation, to give your opinions on how the proposed scheme can also benefit bus passengers.

The A453 east of the M1 is a major route between Nottingham, the M1 and Nottingham East Midlands Airport. The existing single-carriageway road has become increasingly congested, carrying up to 32,000 vehicles a day, has a poor safety record and poses maintenance difficulties.

The proposed scheme, with an approved budget of £90 million, is to widen the A453 to dual carriageway between the M1 and the Crusader roundabout on the approach to Clifton, and to four-lane single carriageway through Clifton from the Crusader roundabout to Farnborough Road, at the start of the A52 Nottingham Ring Road.

The scheme will benefit everyone using the route between the M1 and Nottingham. It will improve safety, reduce congestion and make journeys more reliable for travellers and businesses in the region.

The inclusion of the scheme in the Government's Targeted Programme of Improvements on 18 May 2004 follows the Secretary of State's request to the Highways Agency in December 2002 to draw up improvement proposals based on the recommendations of the A453 (A52-M1 Junction 24) Multi-Modal Study.

A public exhibition of the preliminary proposals was held in Kegworth and Clifton on 16-18 September 2004. An Executive Summary of the exhibition report, as well as a full copy of the report in PDF format may be downloaded from the Publications page.

The Highways Agency appointed Laing O'Rourke Civil Engineering Limited on 6 March 2006 to develop these proposals in detail. Later this year we expect to publish draft Orders and an Environmental Statement. A Public Inquiry will be held if appropriate. If the Secretaries of State decide that a scheme should proceed, we will make statutory Orders and purchase the land needed for the scheme. Construction could start in summer 2009, with the improved road open to traffic in winter 2011/12.
