NCT will introduce 8 late night weekend Go2 bus routes this November as part of a re-launched and simplified night bus network for Greater Nottingham.
The new services will start on the late night of Friday 30 November/early morning Saturday 1 December 2007, with departures on Friday and Saturday nights at 1, 2 and 3am. The routes are largely based on the existing Go2 daytime network to provide a similar late night service for passengers as their normal daytime service.
All services will be operated with fully low floor accessible buses fitted with CCTV for added passenger and driver safety and security.
The 8 late night routes will be:
- N6 – City Centre to Trent Bridge, Central Avenue, West Bridgford and Gamston
- N27 – City Centre to Sneinton, Carlton Hill, Carlton, Westdale Lane and Mapperley
- N28 – City Centre to Ilkeston Road, Beechdale, Bilborough and Wollaton Vale
- N36 – City Centre to Derby Road, Nottingham University, Beeston and Chilwell
- N48 – City Centre to Meadows, Clifton and Ruddington
- N58 – City Centre to Sherwood, Daybrook and Arnold
- N77 – City Centre to Alfreton Road, Aspley Lane, Strelley and Bulwell
- N89 – City Centre to Sherwood, Bestwood Park and Rise Park
As a pre-Christmas special launch deal, the fare on the Night buses will be reduced to £2 per person with Easyrider City and Anytime smart cards also valid for travel without a supplement fare as charged by other operators.
In addition, all day City Rider tickets can also used on the new Night buses following the introduction of a later 04:30 cut off period for day tickets (currently 01:00). The revised all day City Rider ticket validity period will reduce the cost of travel for someone enjoying a night out ‘on the town’ by nearly 40%.
At present a passenger pays £1.40 into the City at the start of their night and £3.00 home on the Night bus, totalling £4.40. The City Rider ticket at £2.70 will now cover both of these journeys.
Nicola Tidy, NCT Marketing and Communications Director commented, “Our passengers have told us that our existing night bus network is too complicated because people are unfamiliar with the long circular routes. We’ve looked very closely at where the key demand is for our current night services and have identified an initial batch of 8 routes we’ll be running at the weekends. With the simpler routes and cheaper, better ticketing available for passengers, we expect these new services to be more appealing and hope to introduce more services in the future.”
To support the launch of the new late night Go2 routes, NCT will be producing a special night bus timetable to be distributed to households across the operating area ahead of the launch and is developing targeted communication methods with the City Council as part of a wider late night strategy.
The existing Night Rider services 96, 97, 98 and 99 will be withdrawn after running in the early morning of Sunday 25 November 2007. These services, which run every night, have been running at an enormous loss for several years and in the past 18 months alone have amounted losses of £105,000. The average usage of these services is only 8.5 passengers per journey with the buses largely running empty during the week, with an increase in demand at the weekends which is reflected by concentrating the new services on the busier Friday and Saturday nights.
