Passengers on some of NCT 36 buses may well observe some unusual footage on the CCTV screens, highlights from the bus cleaning regime.
These shots have been captured by our CCTV cameras and edited by art student Jeff Baker studying at Nottingham Trent University, this clip is his submission for the final part of his degree. This is Jeff's explanation of the project:
On The Buses by Jeff Baker
Systems.
Society is built from networks. It's a system. In other words everything works with everything else. Everything works without knowledge of anything else.
I remember the slight sense of excitement when I first got a job in a warehouse. Although I knew they existed, it was the first time I had seen one from the inside. I was allowed to see the inner workings and become a part of those workings. I had a similar experience when I got a job in a camera shop and was allowed into the dusty stock room where hundreds of cameras that are treated as rare objects downstairs stack the shelves. It was like I was let into a big secret.
Things occur every day that we don't see that we are unaware of. Familiar spaces frequently play host to unfamiliar events. Often, we know these things are going on but happily ignore that we cannot see.
I have peeled back this veneer that protects us from the unseen. I have made holes that allow us to see one through the other. Such hidden secrets are never far from the surface if you scratch away at it with questions. Ask the questions you asked as a child about the workings of the world.
Why are there white lines on the road?
Who makes the road signs?
What happens to the water when it goes down the drain?
How do you become an astronaut?
Where do supermarkets get food from?
We take this network for granted. The system works but we don't see it. Perhaps, like an engine, it would work better if we took it apart and put it back together once in a while. Just to see how it all works.
The Work can be found on certain route 36 buses to Chilwell. Not all of them. But some of them. Perhaps, if this isn't your regular bus route, you could take a bus ride and see a part of the city you haven't seen before.
Keep an eye open for anything that looks out of place. Perhaps it is the art work. Can you see the inner workings, the system, the network that ticks on and on and on? Do you see how the buses are numbered just above the doorway? One is 671 another is 756. Are there really 756 buses in Nottingham? What do people do on buses? Read books? Stare from the window? Look for themselves on the CCTV screens? Use their phones? See what you can see.
