Someone had curtains on their patio
and now they're for sale:
One pair, pink.
Odd that but impressive
to think of the cicada dreams
off the Farnborough Road,
of curtains swishing in the dark.
Needs change all the time,
like the desire to swap
a two bed semi for a bungalow
once you've had enough of stairs,
and the climb into bed becomes enough.
But go back a bit,
to this : A plain gold ring,
no engraving,
no date,
but with a phone number very like:
wedding dress, worn once,
off white.
Which could have lead to the muddle
of children and a
climbing frame
in good condition
and a missing tortoise
lost or stolen
But not, I notice,
‘run away'
Then there's the family, somewhere in Clifton
with pets the size of a grownup's thumb
and appetites measured in cubits.
For Sale: Two geckoes
One chest freezer
but this is the one
I want to take home
for man I see who never quite
reached his dreams.
One leather biker's jacket,
two full-face helmets
one gent's mountain bike.
