Nottingham City Transport has announced its support for the Carlton Brass Training Band in a new partnership that will see Nottingham’s principal bus operator help to secure the local brass instrument talent of the future.
For the year ahead at least, the city’s award-winning bus company has sponsored what will now be known as ‘Carlton Brass Training Band in association with NCT’. The band relies on bookings for performances to keep them going financially, and their new partnership will now be displayed on concert programmes and on promotional banners at these events from now on.
This joint venture came about thanks to one of NCT’s drivers – who plays the cornet in the band.
“Last year we had to find a new band room as our old one in Carlton is due to be demolished,” explains Sarah Rydel who plays bass trombone and was previously secretary for the band. “We’ve now found new premises in Burton Joyce, but our outgoings have increased as a result. Our new partnership with NCT has helped secure our future for a while longer.”
Carlton Brass Training Band teaches people of all ages and has members from age 7 to over 70. Regularly performing at various community events and visiting schools in and around Gedling and Nottingham, the band’s aims are to add to their numbers, provide music to create opportunities for people of all ages, and ‘bring smiles to faces’.
“NCT is such a well-known name that it’s an honour to be associated with them, and I’m sure they will help us gain much-needed publicity,” adds current Carlton Brass Training Band Secretary, Heather Foley. “The longer we can continue, the better for the brass band community. Brass banding has been shrinking so us adding new players is a great thing – whether to our contest-winning main band, Carlton Brass, or to other bands around the country.”
Nottingham City Transport Marketing Manager, Anthony Carver-Smith is just as pleased about the new partnership.
“Carlton Brass Band have played for us at various events, including our hugely popular Heritage Day in the Old Market Square last year,” says Anthony. “It’s our pleasure to be able to support the brass band talent of the future through this sponsorship, and we’re looking forward to helping them ‘blow their own trumpet’ for the year ahead!”
