Clean Air Day 2019

1 year ago Mon 3rd Jun 2019

Clean Air Day is taking place on Thursday 20th June 2019 and following a massive £42m investment in our fleet and infrastructure, we’re significantly reducing our emissions and improving air quality in Nottingham.

25% of this investment has been made through grants from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and through Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council applying for funding for local bus operators from the Department for Transport. The remaining £30m is being paid by NCT.

By early 2020, every one of our 310 buses will meet the most stringent Euro VI emission standards and our average fleet age will be just 4.5 years old – the youngest and greenest in the UK!

This has been achieved through a significant investment in 120 brand new, low emission bio-gas double deck buses, with Nottingham having the largest fleet in the world! 80 of these buses are already in use on routes 6, 10, 17, 24, 25, 27, 36, 44, 45 and 89 with 40 more due in the coming months and shortly to Pink 28 and Navy Park & Ride 49.

For our remaining diesel buses, we’re fitting exhaust treatment technology to them so their emissions are significantly reduced with NOX and Particulate Matter (PM) reduced by 90%.

Green bus with lower emissions following exhaust treatment retrofit

Thanks to this exhaust treatment technology, the tailpipe emissions from an 86 seat double decker bus are lower than most modern diesel cars!

As well as investment in the fleet, our drivers have undertaken training on smoother and more efficient driving techniques (which reduces fuel consumption) and our most recent buses have technology to switch off should they be left idling too long at a bus stop.

Catching the bus is a green way to travel and to thank you for travelling, we’re offering one lucky person an annual Easyrider bus pass, offering unlimited use of our entire network! All you have to do is enter the following competition, which closes at midnight on Clean Air Day!.
