It’s a Goal for When You Wish Upon a Star as Nottingham City Transport and Hastings Magpies Play Charity Match at Meadow Lane

5 months ago Thu 4th Apr 2019

City Operator of the Year, Nottingham City Transport, will be taking on Hastings Magpies on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, in a charity football match to raise money for When You Wish Upon a Star.

Kick off will be at 2pm at Meadow Lane, the home of Notts County, and tickets are now on sale from Nottingham City Transport’s Travel Centre in the Old Market Square. Tickets are £5 for Adults; £2.50 for Under 16s and all under 5s go free.

Hastings Magpies is a team formed in summer 2018 in memory of Ben Hastings, who passed away from cancer aged 31, and the football team is the families commitment to keeping his name alive. Their first match was a memorial match at Radford Football Club to raise money for the Cancer Ward at Nottingham City Hospital.

Ben’s uncle, Pete Hastings Senior, who has been an NCT bus driver for 16 years approached his fellow bus drivers and colleagues to see if they would support the fundraiser and they’ve rallied together to form a team for the match.

Pete said, “The name Hastings Magpies comes from our family name and our love for Notts County Football Club, who went above and beyond with their fantastic help and support through a very difficult time”.

He continued, “I am truly overwhelmed by the support from my work mates in rallying together for this charity football match, to raise money in memory of my cousin Ben, which is really important to me and the family”.

When You Wish Upon a Star LogoWhen You Wish Upon a Star, who grant the wishes of children living with a life threatening illness, are the chosen charity for the money raised by the football match.

Maggie Falconer, Regional Fundraiser for the charity, said ‘We are absolutely thrilled to be the beneficiary of this fantastic charity football match. Peter and his family have been amazing and so enthusiastic, and it’s great to have Nottingham City Transport on board. We’re honoured to be part of keeping Ben’s name alive.  The team are hoping to raise as much as possible to help us grant many more magical Wishes, and  we can’t thank everyone enough for their support, it promises to be a wonderful day’

As well as forming a team to play Hastings Magpies, NCT is also covering the costs of Meadow Lane, so that all money raised goes to benefit When You Wish Upon a Star.

Anthony Carver-Smith, NCT Marketing Manager said, “Over the last three years, NCT has donated £125,000 to local charities and good caused and we are delighted to be supporting this charity football match to raise money for When You Wish Upon a Star. As a popular colleague, the interest and support by Pete’s colleagues to form a team demonstrates the family nature of NCT”.

The football match is also being supported by Lionheart Print, Tiger Stripes Digital, The Pie Fanzine and League Sports.
